Nintendo & Xbox forced to change controller buttons
The video game makers Nintendo and Microsoft's Xbox lost their epic accessibility class action lawsuit in Montreal First Court of Appeals this week.
Going forward all game controls that use the A B X Y control button configuration must change to A B X "ee-grek" or be leveled with substantial fines and penalties.
Nintendo argued that there isn’t the room on the button for the seven spaced word "ee-grek" and such a redesign would be financially devastating. While Microsoft lawyers argued that the “Y” button represents the Y Axis and not the letter.
Regardless of the defendant’s arguments before the Court, Superior Justice Jean LaRue D'aureville found the controllers not to be in compliance with Canadas Loi Sur les langues officielles of 1985, a policy designed for equal access to both French and English in Canada.
Sony's was exempt from the lawsuit because the PlayStation used symbols rather than letters on their controllers. This is a developing story and will be updated as needed.
